This morning (Wed, Nov 8) at around 9:00 am an AMERICAN BITTERN was seen perched on the reeds in the river channel by the pumping station near the southern end of the SCVWD main pond. After posing for a bit with throat and beak stretched upright, it then took off flying to the SCVWD main pond. I believe this may be the same bittern first seen by Peggy Don a couple of weeks ago and then subsequently seen by Gordon & Jeannie Barrett. For anyone interested in searching for this large but elusive bird, you might check both the river channel and the main SCVWD pond.
The Santa Clara Valley Water District Headquarters (SCVWD) is located in Almaden Valley off Almaden Expwy near Coleman Road just north of Almaden Lake.
