Folks:
There are at least two STILT SANDPIPERS at New Chicago Marsh. I
stopped by this afternoon, 11/6/06, and Mike Mammoser pointed out an
adult in basic plumage to Virginia Wilcox and myself. Later, I found
a juvenile that has replaced it scapulars and mantle feathers with
basic feathers but has retained its juvenal wing coverts and
tertials. This gives the bird a two-toned appearance as the juvenal
feathers are dark centered with white edges whereas the basic
feathers are a pale tan-gray. Correspondence with Steve Rottenborn
indicates that he saw the juvenile twice today. It is unclear at
this point if both birds have been seen on prior days.
