[SBB] Palo Alto Baylands and vicinity: roosting shorebirds

Folks:

This morning and early afternoon I went from the Palo Alto Baylands
to the Mountain View Forebay counting roosting shorebirds for the
PRBO/SFBBO survey associated with the high tide. Shorebirds were
pretty much as expected. A pair of RING-NECKED DUCKS were in the
Palo Alto estuary. They are not often seen on salt water. In the
outer Palo Alto FCB, I found an ad. male EURASIAN WIGEON. Further in
on Adobe Creek, not far from the bleachers, I saw a single male
BLUE-WINGED TEAL.

There are few roosting shorebirds on this route compared with the
many thousands seen on a lowering tide along the Bay. I noted four
concentrations over a hundred birds:
1. outer Palo Alto FCB (point of land): Marbled Godwit (141), Willet
(138), Whimbrel (7), Long-billed Curlew (4)
2. Adobe Creek on flood deposits: dowitcher spp. (699), Least
Sandpiper (16), Greater Yellowlegs (3), Willet (1)
3. south island in Charleston Slough: Marbled Godwit (124),
Black-necked Stilt (15), Willet (12), Am. Avocet (7), Long-billed Curlew (1)
4. inner Mayfield Slough: dowitcher spp. (250), Least Sandpiper (4),
Greater Yellowlegs (1)
