[SBB] Lake Cunningham Park

It was incredibly birdy at Lake Cunningham Park this morning. Phyllis Swanson and I found our first good bird, an Orange crowned Warbler, near the Marina bathrooms. As we birded along Silver Creek behind the water slides we saw a Townsends Warbler, some Lincoln's Sparrows, Belted Kingfisher and a good variety of woodpeckers. I soon gave up trying to count hundreds of Yellow-rumped Warblers!! Raptors were numerous all morning.

Phyllis scoped birds from the dock as 50 White Pelicans glided over the lake beneath a clear blue sky. Pied billed, Eared and Western Grebes, Bufflehead, No. Shoveler and Ruddy Ducks were among species seen at the lake.

It got quiet after lunch but we found another hot spot across from parking lot B. before we left. Here we saw several Hermit Thrush many sparrows and another Orange crowned Warbler. My final tally was 46 species.

                          ****************************

I stopped at the Guadalupe River trail north of Blossom Hill Rd. on the way to Lake Cunningham. A male Black-throated Gray Warbler was feeding in an Alder tree south of the granite boulders.
