This morning, 2 May 06, I ventured up to Ed Levin Park. The Elm Picnic Area was pretty quiet, with only a couple of WILD TURKEYS roaming the lawn and a BARN OWL roosting in the trees.
So I climbed up to the sycamore draw above Sandy Wool Lake. As I approached the draw a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW popped up on the hillside, posing briefly before flying upslope and disappearing into the grass. LAZULI BUNTINGS were singing at the sycamores, where I had 2 males and a female. Four more males were singing at various locations along the trail above the draw. A RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW was under the trees collecting and carrying nesting material, while a HOUSE WREN was singing persistently.
As I came down the trail from above, I ran into Randy Little at the draw, where he told me of his grosbeaks. As we headed back down to check for them, I heard a BLUE GROSBEAK "chinking" from somewhere up ahead of us. Then the bird
flew from a mustard stalk, crossed the trail, and headed downslope. Randy played his tape here and back at the original location, but wasn't able to resurrect the birds.
From here I went up to the Sierra Road summit, where I had a pair of GOLDEN EAGLES soaring overhead and a pair of HORNED LARKS flushing from the roadside. Coming back down I had 2 RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS about a mile below the summit, one singing from the fenceline and the other hopping about nervously.
