All,
I stopped by Almaden Lake over lunch today 5/1/06, and found the
first-summer COMMON LOON still present, foraging extensively north of
the island. The two WESTERN GREBES were also still present, along with 3
CASPIAN TERNS, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS, 2 RING-BILLED GULLS, 2 GREEN HERONS,
and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER. Two of the Caspian Terns were loafing and
interacting on the small gravel island west of the heronry island - and
when a GREAT EGRET tried to wade across the narrow gap between the
islands, one the Caspian Terns dive bombed it repeatedly. The egret
initially fluffed up its plumage, took a defensive posture, and tried to
strike back - but after repeated attacks it retreated to the herony. I
wonder whether the terns are considering nesting there!
