[SBB] Stevens Creek CP

All,

Over lunch today 4/17/06, I headed up to Stevens Creek County Park to
scout for the upcoming Varied Twitchers Big Day. I spent a couple of
hours up there, mostly checking out areas below the dam. The mid-day
hour and a bit of a wind resulted in fewer singing birds than I had
hoped for, but persistent searching ended up producing some year birds
for me. Recent arrivals included 2 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES (one at the
Chestnut PA, the other at the Baytree PA), 3 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS
(none singing), 4+ WARBLING VIREOS, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, and 5
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS. Lingering winter birds were also in evidence,
with 5 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS (3 singing), 8 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS (many
singing), 4 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, and a singing male AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH. At least 2 CASPIAN TERNS and an OSPREY were over the
reservoir. Other birds of note included a WHITE-THROATED SWIFT, a female
SELASPHORUS HUMMINGBIRD (Chestnut PA), a BELTED KINGFISHER, 3 HAIRY
WOODPECKERS, 5 BROWN CREEPERS, and 2 PURPLE FINCHES.

A quick stop at McClellan Ranch on the way back to work added 2
BAND-TAILED PIGEONS, 6 AUDUBON'S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (including a
singing male), a male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK at the feeder, 10 more
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, and males of both HOODED and BULLOCK'S ORIOLES
(the latter nest-building).
