SBB'ers - posting for Mike Mammoser, who will be back on SBB very soon
now...
On Monday, 17 Apr 06, I visited Ed Levin Park in the foothills of
Milpitas. Looking for owls, I was able to find a single BARN OWL
roosting in the Elm Picnic Area, but failed at Long-eared Owl. I decided
to check the eucalyptus along the edge of the golf course here and
managed to scare up 3 CHIPPING SPARROWS off the lawn. A MERLIN flashed
by overhead and then dove on something by the entrance road.
As I worked up the path towards the northeast corner of the picnic area,
I heard a persistently calling HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER, which led me to a
visual contact in an oak tree. When this bird moved to an adjacent oak,
it led me to a flock of warblers. This flock was composed mainly of
YELLOW-RUMPEDS but also included an ORANGE-CROWNED, a couple WILSON’S,
and a NASHVILLE WARBLER.
A CASPIAN TERN was working over Sandy Wool Lake the entire time that I
was there.
A walk up to the sycamore draw above the lake produced nothing of note,
so I returned to the Elm Picnic Area and picked up my year PACIFIC-SLOPE
FLYCATCHER.
