Re: [SBB] More on Rufous Hummingbirds

hi Phyllis,

I heard off list from both Bill Bousman and David Suddjian on the migration
and breeding of Rufous in the Central CA:

1) the normal spring migration period for Rufous Hummer in the central CA
area extends into mid-May.

2) The peak of Rufous Hummingbird migration is from the third week in March
through the middle of April in Santa Clara County (see the SCVAS web site
for bar graphs). However, they can be found as early as mid-January and
some males returning early from their breeding grounds and young birds later
in the season can be found anytime through middle September (based on
banding records).

No, they don't breed here. Their southern limit is Oregon with possibly a
few birds nesting in northern California in some years. There are some
historic records from Humboldt County, but none were determined to be
nesting there during their 5-year atlas. Allen's is, of course, an abundant
breeder along the California coast but is rarely found more than 25 miles
from the sea. When Rufous has nested in northern California, it has been in
the mountains at higher elevations well away from the coast.

Thank you all!

Mary
