Folks:
This morning, 4/19/06, I cycled from Menlo Park to Moffett Field and
returned in the afternoon. The BLACK SKIMMER flock remains at Charleston
Slough and I had maximum counts of 22, 24, and 28 in the morning and
afternoon. Shoreline Lake had at least 9 SURF SCOTERS, which is not too
many more than the 6-7 birds who have summered here in recent years and are
mostly cripples. We will see in the coming months how many remain. At
least three female COMMON GOLDENEYES remain on the lake. For the few
months, 1-2 basic HORNED GREBES have been on the lake, but today I saw a
pair of alternate Horned Grebes and they were doing their tango-like look
this way and that way courtship behavior. No walking on water miracles,
however.
Golden-crowned Sparrows seemed to be everywhere. Numbers appeared much
higher than found locally through the winter but this could be that the
local birds are more obvious as they get excited about moving on, or it
could be that many birds came through in the clear weather of the last two
nights and are just refueling.
