Re: [SBB] Palo Alto Baylands/Duck Pond , 4/5/2006

Correction: The hawk at the duck pond was a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. I have yet to see that Cooper's Hawk that so many people have reported in that area.

Also, last night at sunset, a female Northern Harrier flew very low over the Coast Casey Forebay. I've seen Northern Harriers fly by the restroom many times before, but this is the first time I've seen one swoop down to the water level in the forebay. She didn't catch anything. Most of the shorebirds fled well in advance of her arrival.

Yes, I am sure there are at least two male pheasants in the vicinity of the Palo Alto duck pond. I saw two males on opposite sides of the lagoon by the Interpretive Center within 5 minutes of each other a couple weeks ago. There was also one along Adobe Creek both Wednesday and Thursday.

I went to the duck pond at lunch today (April 6). Since there were so many photographers at the rookery, I walked out to the Interpretive Center. All the shorebirds and swallows went crazy when a Cooper's Hawk flew from the Interpretive Center to the ranger station. The most vocal birds were two Killdeer that flew around the area that was fenced off because of their nesting. After spending some time at the ranger station, the hawk flew to the eucalyptus trees just past the palm trees at the rookery, to the delight of the photographers that were there for the Black-crowned Night Herons.

I went to Charleston Slough at sunset again to get more pictures of the Black Skimmers. I haven't sorted through all my skimmer photos from the past two days, but my other recent photos are at

Spent a little time Wednesday afternoon at the pond, mostly watching
the herons (along with a growing number of other photogs...).

Pretty much the usual suspects at this point. Only two things really
came to note:

first, there are two pheasants there, not one. I actually saw both on
the same trip. One's down by the bathroom down near the boat dock.
the other is up near the bridge (where I first saw the pheasant a
while back....), in the brush out behind the closed parking lot.
Unless he can boogie back and forth without anyone else noticing in
under 2 minutes, I think it's safe to say we have multiple nests and
multiple couples.

second, playing "one of these is not like the other" down at the duck
pond, I found a couple of northern pintail drakes. I've got pictures
coming (slowly). Also, I think, a couple of hens, but I don't have
shots of them.
