We just got back from our Santa Clara County Big Day: sixteen hours
of birding from before dawn until well after dark. I'll send a full
trip report later, but wanted to list a few highlights here tonight:
The bird of the day for us was a first-of-spring LAZULI BUNTING at
Arastradero Preserve, Redtail Loop Trail in a spot where we were
hoping to see Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (we never did see them today).
Also on the same trail we saw at least a dozen RING-NECKED DUCKs on
Felt Lake, a SELASPHORUS HUMMINGBIRD in the eucalyptus, WHITE-
THROATED SWIFTS overhead, HOUSE WRENs and WESTERN BLUEBIRDs using the
nest boxes, and a coyote running up the hill!
Runners up for best bird:
- an AMERICAN DIPPER on Stevens Canyon Road
- a LONG-EARED OWL at Ed Levin County Park
- the CLAPPER RAIL washing himself in the low tide in Rail Alley at
Palo Alto Baylands
- breeding-plumaged BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERs via scope at the end of the
Palo Alto Baylands boardwalk
- HORNED LARKs in the fading light half a mile up the Twin Gates
trail in Grant Ranch County Park where we ended our day
We beat our goal of getting 100 species, but I have some tallying to
do before I know the exact count. More later.
