After doing a Clapper Rail survey on Thursday morning, 27 Apr 06, I headed to CCFS to check the riparian corridor. The migrant activity wasn't as good as the last time, but I did have a SWAINSON'S THRUSH calling from the undergrowth. Also, I still had 2 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS - a male perched in a small bare tree just north of net 9590 and a female hanging out just south of net 9655. Two COOPER'S HAWKS were in the old reveg area between transects 9330 and 9385. One, in immature plumage and probably a female, was calling "wek wek wek" and also giving a soft "wah" call. I'm thinking there might be some nesting interest here.
On Friday, 28 Apr 06, I went up to Smith Creek and checked the hillside behind the fire station. I managed to find one flock of warblers that included 2-3 male HERMIT WARBLERS, 3 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, and a singing RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. Some singing warblers in a nearby tree disappeared
while I looked through the first group. Also, while checking out the flock I had a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL calling, but it shut up before I could try to track it down.
Also interesting was a GREEN HERON flying low over the saddle between the hills behind the fire station. I don't know if this is unusual or not for this area.
Down by the creek I had a couple of cooperative CASSIN'S VIREOS and a single lone male HERMIT THRUSH. Up slope east of the creek was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.
Lingering birds included small numbers of both GOLDEN-CROWNED and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, as well as a HERMIT THRUSH.
