During a peaceful afternoon walk in the mud at Arastradero Preserve
yesterday afternoon, I heard/saw at least 6 Red-shouldered Hawks, including
a confusing mix of three or four that were either courting or trying to
drive away the Red-tail that was circling. I watched one of the
red-shoulders fold its wings and do an impressive dive down to a perch on a
tree. Also a Western Bluebird pair, the usual kites, Acorn Woodpeckers,
Flickers, Spotted Towhees, crowned sparrows, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and
Bewick's Wrens.
Only one loop is available for use and there is a new map that shows most
of the upper trails as "seasonal use." The creek trail is in good shape and
the Acorn trail is good except for a couple of soupy spots. The new
interpretive center is progressing slowly, like all Palo Alto city building
projects.
Good birding,
Nancy Teater
