Things were quiet, between all the storms, at the
little pond below Monte Bello OSP's Gate 5 today, March 6 2006. I was much
cheered to see that several hummingbirds have held on through everything so far,
including the 3 inches of snow I found there last Friday morning. A surprise
among them was a female Selasphorus hummer collecting coyote bush down for a
nest lining.
I wonder, can this breeding confirmation serve
as a reliable indicator that this bird was an Allen's? (Are there, in
fact, any breeding records for Rufous Hummingbird in the
county?)
The only other bird of special interest today was a
single Sora posing sweetly atop the battered remnants of last year's
cattails.
