This morning, 9 May 06, I made the hike in to the rock outcrops on the Grizzly Gulch Trail in Henry Coe State Park, as mentioned by Mike Rogers and Dave Weber. Unfortunately, not a sight or sound of a Canyon Wren did I get (no year-bird payoff for the blister on my heel). Perhaps my late arrival (late morning) had something to do with it?
Anyway, I did have a singing YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER at the outcrops; likely a late migrant as there is no record of breeding in this area. Also, a silent WILSON'S WARBLER was undoubtedly a migrant as well. At least 3 RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS were singing too, in this area.
I had a dozen or more VARIABLE CHECKERSPOT butterflies; a lifer for me! This is the common name that my guide uses for Euphydryas chalcedona, which I noticed others calling the Chalcedon Checkerspot.
