This morning (Tues, 5/9) I hiked around Mt Umunhum for awhile and found a
few spring migrants.
A singing WARBLING VIREO was in the dense foliage by the locked gate where
the small parking area is located. Continuing my walk up Mt Umunhum Road
past the gate a male WESTERN TANAGER was in a gray pine by the road and a
calling ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was in the chaparral shrubbery close to the
road. About 300' down the Barlow Road trail a pair of interacting
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS was seen with one of the gnatcatchers carrying nesting
material.
Birds of interest along the Bald Mountain Trail included an OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER on a snag down slope from the trail, a male LAZULI BUNTING in the
chaparral brush, a calling COMMON RAVEN flying over, and another BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER.
A WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE was seen along Mt Umunhum Road on my drive back down
the hill.
After the cold early spring Yerba Santa is finally blooming and
Chalcedon Checkerspot butterflies are now beginning to emerge. Also of
interest were two hill-topping Anise Swallowtails at the summit of the Bald
Mountain Trail.
A nice walk -
