All, I led my Palo Alto Adult School birding group on a three county trip yesterday. We located 78 species, with highlights including 1 GREATER ROADRUNNER, 6-7 BLUE GROSBEAK, 5 GRASSHOPPERS SPARROWS, RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS, 3 COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRDS, 2 PHAINOPEPLA, 1 CANYON WREN, 1ROCK WREN all along Del Puerto Canyon road. The TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS are still nesting at the small pond along DPC Road. LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES were found both at Frank Raines Regional Park, and at the Junction with Mines/San Antonio Valley Road. LEWIS' WOODPECKER (2) were found a short distance south of the Junction, but were not well seen. A total of 13 WOOD DUCKS were in the pond before the big right-hand bend on San Antonio Valley Road. We doubled back at this point to look for SAGE SPARROW near the cattle grate. The construction site between the fire station and and the grate did not make us optimistic, but we eventually were able to see a singing male at close range. [ Incidentally, does anyone know what this construction project is? I hate to think about how much habitat has been cleared to make room for whatever it is they plan to build... ] At the summit we found BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and several LAZULI BUNINGS. A full report with mileage and stops can be found at: http://www.birdguy.net/reports/paas_spring06.html Matthew Dodder Canada Goose --END |
