After work today some of Les's former students (a.k.a. orphans) met at
the kite-flying area at Shoreline Park where we saw a NORTHERN HARRIER
fly right over a BURROWING OWL on the dry hillside. A
juvenile RED-TAILED HAWK perched atop a tall pole.
The highlight of the walk was just before the bridge where I always
hope to see rails (though today we only saw footprints): in the
"creek" between the paved bike path and the concert parking lot were
PIED-BILLED GREBES. One was sitting on a nest in the middle of
the water, and the other was going to and fro, bringing in nesting
material which the other would then work into the nest. I could
have watched them for hours!
But we had to get back to our cars and zip up Shoreline Blvd. to the
Century Cinemas to watch "Hoot", the movie featuring Burrowing Owls in
Florida. It was a quiet night at the theater, and just before the
movie started Kay leaned over and said "Do you realize that the
majority of the people in the theater have just seen a Burrowing
Owl?!". Sure enough, only 5 or 6 people were sitting in front of
the 7 of us!
If you haven't seen this movie yet, you should know it's a kids movie
and not a documentary like March of the Penguins. Our group had
mixed reviews: 3 gave it thumbs up, 2 gave it thumbs down,
and 2 gave it 1/2 thumb up (I'm in the 1/2 category). After
the movie both Debbi and Kay asked me if I heard the Black Rail.
I missed it, but if you see "Hoot" you can keep your ears open for it!
Also a reminder: the path from Charleston Slough (San Antonio
Rd.) to Shoreline Park is going to be closed while they redo the trails
over the next 6 (?) weeks, so if you are going out for a walk you'll
want to pick where to park with that in mind.
