[SBB] loons at Lexington Reservoir

All,

Scott Terrill informed me that he had seen two loons on Lexington
Reservoir while driving by on highway 17 yesterday 5/14/06, so I headed
up there over lunch today 5/15/06. Sure enough, there were loons there -
I counted 5 basic-plumaged COMMON LOONS at mid-reservoir, viewed from
Miller Point on the east shore. Some of these birds appeared quite
small-billed at a distance, reminiscent of a Pacific Loon, but each had
the white collar (one almost had a complete neck ring!), blocky head
shape, and white around the eye of a Common Loon. Eventually all five
birds came together and began preening and bathing instead of foraging.
Three birds broke off from this group and swam over to the east shore
near where I was, providing nice scope views. At least three of the
birds have pale edging to the back feathers, confirming that they are
SY, or second-calendar-year, birds. The other two are likely also young
birds, although perhaps with the pale edges to the back feathers worn
off or less apparent.

Also at the reservoir were 9 to 11 COMMON MERGANSERS, including a pair
west of the highway, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS, 1 GREEN HERON, and a pair of
CANADA GEESE.
