All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I decided to circumnavigate New Chicago
Marsh, clockwise, starting at the railroad tracks where they cross the EEC
(Environmental Education Center) entrance road. After about a half hour of
fairly slow birding Frank spotted a breeding plumaged BLACK TERN flying low over
the open water in the northwestern section of the marsh. Then, as I was
preparing to call Mike Rogers, Frank spotted a second breeding plumaged Black
Tern closely interacting with the first. Later, after Mike left,
the BLTE disappeared and could not be re-found (earlier when they
stopped flying we were able to locate them perched on adjacent posts in the
water). Frank and I then continued our way around the
marsh re-finding the BLTE flying low, feeding, over the northwestern
section of Salt Pond A16. Best viewing was over the third island
(counting from the EEC parking lot). I should note that as we talked
to SFBBO personnel, "Jill" said that they had three Black Terns in the same area
about three weeks ago but that they don't normally report such sightings
(many areas they work are not open to the public). Those wanting
to try for these birds should probably bird from the dike between New Chicago
Marsh and Salt Pond A16 as it provides the best views of the Marsh and
the Salt Pond (the Salt Pond cannot be seen from the railroad
tracks). Use of scopes recommended but are not absolutely
required.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
