All,
I went stint chasing at New Chicago Marsh this evening 7/16/06 from just before 5pm to sunset (just after 8:30pm). There were a couple thousand WESTERN SANDPIPERS in the marsh, which made for quite a bit of (futile) searching. I found an adult SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER from the fence at the extreme north end of Spreckles Street just before 6pm and, after watching it for 15 minutes, biked back over to the dirt road by the railroad tracks where Dean Manley and I enjoyed absolutely point-blank views of this bird until we left that spot at 7:30pm. It was very aggressive, chasing away both Western and Least Sandpipers from its little corner of the pond.
Otherwise birds of note included 3 WHIMBRELS that left the marsh calling at 6:25pm, 210+ WILSON'S PHALAROPES, many of both species of DOWITCHERS, and dozens of SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. Many shorebirds were seen leaving to the south towards Arzino Ranch in the evening, but there were still many that appeared to be content to roost in the marsh.
