[SBB] A peep, a stint, and a swallow

This morning, 16 Jul 06, I headed for Alviso and the
good birds reported from there yesterday. I first
stopped at State and Spreckles, finding an adult
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER in the pond there. Then I went
to the EEC and walked out the levee of salt pond A16.
Running into Roland Kenner and Pat Kenny, and finding
out that they had been out there all morning with no
turnstone to show for it, I turned around with the
intention of walking out the railroad tracks. They
decided to join me, as did Matt Brady and Oscar
Johnson, who I ran into on the way back as well.

As we walked past the State and Spreckles pond from
the tracks, Matt picked out an interesting bird and
soon we were all on it. After a half hour or so of
studying it, we concluded that it had to be an adult
LITTLE STINT. It eventually flew to the east of the
tracks, joining the hundreds of WESTERN SANDPIPERS out
in the middle of the marsh. Dave Weber joined us at
this point. Although we picked it out a couple times
there, it disappeared against the edge of the
pickleweed and was not seen again.

While waiting on the stint, we picked up on the adult
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER along the edge of the tracks
and had close in views of it.

I decided to check the pond at the end of the tracks,
where I found a single SNOWY PLOVER, a LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. On the way
back to the others I had a BANK SWALLOW fly by low
overhead and off into Alviso.

Arriving back at the stint spot, we were joined by
Scott and Linda Terrill, Bob Reiling, Frank Vanslager,
and Peggy Don. We continued to obtain nice looks at
the SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, but no stint action.

I went with Matt and Oscar to get a bite to eat and we
returned a little later to find only Dave Weber
remaining at State and Spreckles. We searched the pond
from here, having only the BANK SWALLOW again to show
for it.

One more walk down the railroad tracks caught us up
with Mike Rogers, who had arrived at that point. But
no further sightings were had, at least not before I
left for the day.
