[SBB] Little Blue Heron (Salt Pond A16)

Folks:

This morning, 6/9/06, I cycled around Salt Ponds A16 and A17, hoping for
alternate-plumaged Black Terns. No luck with finding them, but there is a
lot of salt pond habitat around here. My consolation prize was a LITTLE
BLUE HERON in Salt Pond A16. I first found the bird about 0830 hrs in the
northwest corner and last saw it there at 0940 hrs. This was an adult
bird, mostly slate-blue, with the outer half of the bill dark, the inner
half a pale blue, and the lores were a pale blue (but not the cobalt blue
of a breeding adult). It had a few head and back plumes. It foraged in
the salt pond and I saw it once catch a sculpin-like fish. The corner here
can be reached from the Alviso Marina CP lot (about 1.9 mi.) or from the
EEC, taking the CW route around A16 (about 2.2 mi.). Two Little Blues in
one day, how about that!

Among the regular birds, I noted a pair of NORTHERN SHOVELER in New Chicago
Marsh, a male NORTHERN PINTAIL in the marsh and two males and a female in
A16, and two pairs of LESSER SCAUP in New Chicago Marsh. No young of these
species. A basic BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was at State and Spreckles and a
BURROWING OWL was along the EEC entrance road.
