All,
I spent 2.5 hours yesterday morning 6/18/06 birding along the east side
of Coyote Creek between Montague Expressway and Tasman Drive, hoping for
eastern vagrants. Ended up with no vagrants, but there was a fair amount
of breeding activity. At least two of six GREAT BLUE HERON nest
platforms were still active, with two large young each. These nests are
about halfway between Cottonwood Dr and Sycamore Drive this year, just
over the block boundary into atlas block 9540 instead of in nearby block
9535 as in the past (a nest platform at the end of Cottonwood Drive was
still intact). I also found a TREE SWALLOW nest (previous confirmations
in this block from CCFS), NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS feeding young,
DOWNY WOODPECKER nest with young and recently fledged young, WESTERN
SCRUB-JAY feeding young, etc. A juvenile DARK-EYED JUNCO along the creek
was already independent, but a singing male in the office complex across
McCarthy Blvd suggests that breeding is still ongoing (although we have
yet to confirm breeding in block 9540). Several WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES may have been part of a family group, but were too secretive
for me to confirm breeding evidence. These birds have been at this odd
urban location just south of Sycamore Drive for some time now, with
records on 17 July 2004 (Al Eisner), 14 Aug 2004 (me), 29 Oct 2004
(Steve Rottenborn), and 6 Nov 2005 (Steve Rottenborn). Three
PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS were singing along the creek as well.
