[SBB] New Chicago Marsh (again) - 7/21/06

All,

As of 12:45pm today 7/21/06, nobody in New Chicago Marsh had relocated
the Little Stint.

The birdiest pond today was the one just south of where the railroad
tracks join the main line heading north from the Alviso Marina. Here
were 800 peeps (95% WESTERN SANDPIPERS), 140+ WILSON'S PHALAROPES
(including 2+ juveniles), 30+ RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 6 SNOWY PLOVERS
(including 2 juveniles).

Back at the State and Spreckles pond, I again managed to locate an adult
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, just after 11:45am. This bird appeared to be
different from yesterday's two individuals. It was also very
short-billed, but had a strip of pale gray scapulars on each side that
in the bright sunlight looked like white lines on the bird's shoulders.
The mantle had broader contrasting white streaks (almost like stint
braces) and the bird was overall quite worn, especially the tertials.
Today's bird was less aggressive than the other two as well. The
dependable SESA that had been present since Sunday was not in its usual
spot today.

Other shorebirds in the marsh today included 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 5
WILLETS, and 1 basic BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER. Although SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS still predominate, several LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were around
as well.

Three NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were the only non-Barn/Cliff
swallows today.

Mike Rogers
