drove up to steven's creek dam yesterday; on the way up the hill, to
my surprise there was a woodpecker sitting on a utility wire hanging
out. I was only half looking and worrying about the truck on my tail
when I caught the flash of red; I ended up circling back and driving
past again, and it was cooperative enough to not leave until I got in
range a second time.
It had a much larger bill than the downy does, and was about the size
of a large scrub jay, and the strip of red on the back of the head,
so I'm tentatively IDing it as a hairy woodpecker, but I wish I'd had
the ability to do more than a double-drive by.
the lake at the dam was quiet -- three double crested cormorants (one
flying, one fishing, one trying to look like a loon in the distance),
and one duck too far out to clearly ID... no raptors while I was there.
