Hi SBBers,
This morning, 7/19/06, I was walking along the rr spur track in the New
Chicago Marsh when a BAND-TAILED PIGEON flew low across the track just in
front of me and landed about 50 feet away on the West side of the track.
This is an area where there is bare dirt marsh bottom exposed between the
track and a pickle weed covered bank. The pigeon dropped down to the dirt
and began walking along the pickle weed margin. To my supprise he picked up
a snail shell by it's opening and then quickly dropped the empty shell.
The pigeon repeated this act with 4 additional empty snail shells while I
was watching. While I didn't seen this Band-tailed Pigeon pick up a live
snail I can't help but think he has aquired a taste for raw escargot.
