[SBB] Coyote Creek waterbird pond management

Dear South Bay Birders,
Regardin the waterbird pond, please find below the Water District's response
to my inquiry on management objectives for the pond. They answered my query
quickly, as you will see below, and I found the explanation very
satisfactory, as I believe you will too, thus winnng my ad hoc "great
service" award.
Good birding!
Janet

> Water level management criteria are as follows:
>
> "Water depths in the pond will be maintained for a maximum
> benefit of wading, dabbling, and resting waterbirds (between 0.5 to
> 1.5 feet depth) during winter and spring (October to April).
> Water levels in summer and fall will depend upon a number of
> management needs such as mosquito control in the drainage
> channels and control of algal blooms or odors in the pond. Other
> problems associated with stagnation (low levels of dissolved
> oxygen) may require water exchange. A staff gauge, located in the
> pond just south of the inlet culvert, will provide for water depth
> measurements."
