All,
About 9 this morning Frank Vanslager and I found a SOLITARY SANDPIPER in
one of the eastern ponds of the Gilroy Water Treatment Facility. The bird
was somewhat nervous and shortly after being found it flew to the southern edge
of the pond (away from us) and after a couple minutes flew out of sight.
About 45 minutes later we re-found the SOSA in the eastern edge of the next
pond north of where we initially found it. Unfortunately it once again
flushed and was then re-found in the first pond where I was able to get
some distant photographs. When we first arrived at the facility we found a
"pair" of adult MUTE SWANS in a pond near the entrance. I gather that
Calif. is not one of the 30+ states in which these birds are countable but the
birds themselves appeared to be quite wild. The lady in the office says
that the Swans have been at the facility for a couple months. We
then stopped at New Chicago Marsh which continues to have fewer and fewer birds
as the water level drops (not a good thing). Three to four SNOWY
PLOVERS were seen, one in the pond at State and Spreckles Ave in
Alviso.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
