All,
This morning 1/30/2006, as the fog ceiling rose and
fell over the little pond at Monte Bello's Gate 5, a Pileated Woodpecker called
repeatedly from the Stevens Creek canyon below. There had been no sign of the
local PIWOs here in recent weeks.
A pair of Cooper's Hawks were at the pond, the
first time I've encountered more than one there since late last summer. The pair
of White-tailed Kites that hangs around near the main parking lot was very vocal
and seemed to be courting.
In the grass near the top of the White Oak trail
there was a Lincoln's Sparrow and three Savannah Sparrows.
Over the weekend, someone placed a Wood Duck
nestbox at the pond. It will be interesting to observe how it gets used.
Although I have never seen that species at Monte Bello, it is on the official
list for the preserve.
