Walked the 2 mile Stile Ranch - Fortini Trail loop this morning. It was
quite cold at the beginning and very quiet. Managed to see a pair of
ROCK WRENS at the top of the trail in the serpentine. A pair of
BLACK-SHOULDERED KITES was driving everything, including 2 red-tails, a
crow and a flicker, out of a grove of live oaks. I wouldn't be
surprised if they were thinking of breeding in there. BEWICKS WRENS
were everywhere. Finally found my target birds, 2 RUFOUS-CROWNED
SPARROWS and 2 CALIFORNIA THRASHERS in the scrub along Vincente Rd.
along with a very large covey of CALIFORNIA QUAIL, probably 30 birds
judging by the ones I saw and the ones I heard, and a group of 11 WILD
TURKEYs. The trail is very wet and extremely slippery on the downhill
parts.
