I joined Dave Quady late this afternoon looking for the Northern Waterthrush
in the Charleston Marsh. We had surprisingly good luck. After 10 minutes, we
heard the bird give a sharp chip note at the southern (?) end of the marsh,
on the left side of creek from the pump house. We spotted it in a tree,
then it flew down to the muddy creek edge. Dave got a good look but I did
not, so we stayed awhile longer, and it chipped again. We walked back around
to the west side of the pump house/creek, and there is was again, same
place, under a thick willow branch lying over the creek. Then, it popped up
in plain view, chirping and pumping its tail from side to side. It kept
going up higher in the tree, always very visible, and at last flew away
north in the marsh. I was struck by the dense dark streaking on its under
parts and the thin, uniform supercillium. It was also quite buffy colored
underneath. Its tail seemed to bob both up and down as well as side to side,
a behavior which is supposed to be characteristic of the Louisiana
Waterthrush, per Jon Dunn's Peterson Warbler guide. Anyway, it was nice to
get such a lucky and satisfying look at the bird.
