In reply to Les' posting about a leucistic hawk near Pacheco Pass -
In mid-February 2002 I was driving west over Pacheco Pass after a day in
the Panoche Valley and Mercey Hot Springs. It was raining
heavily, and as we came to the last downhill section of the road, we saw
what appeared to be an almost entirely white buteo flying above the road to the
north.
Fortunately, there was a pull-out alongside the road, and we were able to
observe the buteo perched on a tree above the roadway to the north. It was
clearly a RED-TAILED HAWK, as one of the non-leucistic parts of the hawk
included it's tail. Nice coincidence.
I was able to pinpoint the date from the great pictures that I got of a
Long-eared Owl at Mercey Springs.
I'm glad to hear that he/she is still around.
