All,
This morning Frank Vanslager, Pat Kenny, Peggy Don, Roland Kenner and I all
happened to meet at the first pond on the left along the CCFS entrance road
while looking for the previously reported Red-necked Grebe. We saw no
evidence of a live bird but did see a carcass in the northwest corner of
the pond that could easily be the bird (the bird had clearly been under stress
and had not eaten for some time as there are no fish in the slag ponds).
The carcass in question showed a black top of the head with a white area
meeting at the back of the head, the upper back was also black with the
rest of the bird being a dark gray. This may all be conjecture but I
would be surprised if the bird is subsequently found alive.
Take care,
Bob
