Re: [SBB] Starlings and Barn Owls

Hello Lisa & SBBers,

When the American Kestrels nested locally, we had a chance to observe their eating habits.  While the chicks were growing, Western Meadow Larks, various blackbirds and an occasional slow Barn Swallow fledgling were delivered regularly by their parents; but as the Kestrel chicks neared fledging, European Starlings were the major part of their diet.  But the European Starlings are still doing quite well since at least half of the birds in the "blackbird" flocks here are European Starlings. . .

Very good points made regarding our observations of
nature doing its thing.

I just had to add a tidbit I heard last November while
attending the Stockton based, Central Valley Bird
Symposeum.  One woman studies Barn Owl activity.  She
said they monitored Barn Owl boxes to check out the
owl pellets below. As they disected the pellets they
were all surprised to learn that the Barn Owls were
clearly eating European Starlings.

Bon Appetit!
