I scouted 6 reservoirs today as I prepare for an upcoming birding trip. We were lazy and stayed in the car and out of the rain as we checked out the landscape.
At Guadalupe Reservoir we found a large flock of YELLOW BILLED MAGPIES foraging the wet ground with a flock of Red Winged Blackbirds.
Almaden Reservoir had WOOD DUCKS all over the place and if I had counted I am sure I would have hit 60 plus. They were everywhere! Also had three pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER, one female BELTED KINGFISHER and an EARED GREBE.
Calero Reservoir had COMMON MERGANSERS, EARED GREBE and one BALD EAGLE playing in the rain.
When we hit Chesbro Reservoir the rain was coming down hard. The most unusual find was a CRAYFISH we drove over while on Willow Springs Road. This was one big beast,
although it never would have won against a car, so I helped him (very carefully) cross the road. I must add it had a rather bad attitude and wasn't very grateful for my assistance. We wondered why the Crayfish crossed the road and decided it was looking for the chicken. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
At Anderson Reservoir we watched a GOLDEN EAGLE head into the trees for what appeared to be its night roost. We also spotted 8 bucks with full racks gathered together above the road.
Coyote Reservoir had few birds out as the sun was setting, but we watched a group of wild pigs stuck in the middle of the flowing waters. As they ate the water had risen and they soon found themselves surrounded. We actually watched them try and cross the fast moving waters. They stopped, thought about their situation for many a moment and decided to turn back to the island.
I guess I should add we found AMERICAN COOTS at each reservoir and not a single Red Phalarope anywhere.
Happy New Year everyone.
