All,
Things were a bit difficult on Sunday's SCVAS field trip what with the rain
and the high winds but we did manage to find a few good birds to start the year
off. At the Alviso Marina we had many RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS
(including a couple males) and at least one HORNED GREBE; at the Sunnyvale Water
treatment Facility a BURROWING OWL (low on bank just south of the
parking area and east of the drainage channel) and we had a pair of
BLUE-WINGED TEAL with the ducks in the Lockheed-Martin marsh. At the
Charleston Rd Marsh we had a WINTER WREN (a hundred feet east of it's previously
reported site), GREEN HERON, WILSON'S SNIPE, FOX SPARROW, HERMIT
THRUSH and CEDAR WAXWINGS. At Crittenden Marsh a few in the
group managed acceptable views of flying RED PHALAROPE there while all got
good views of three female and one male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
