I went to the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant this afternoon, December 31. Since this was my first time there, I didn't know that the Levee Trail did not connect to the other trails and ended up all the way at Sunnyvale Baylands Park. This was a much longer walk than I had intended to take, but at least I got to see some interesting birds in the big pond that I walked around (Pond A4). Highlights were Red-breasted Mergansers (2 males and 4 females), and four different Grebe species: Pied-billed, Horned, Eared, and Western (at least 30). They were all too far for good photographs, but I took pictures anyway because I keep a "photographic life list." The Red-breasted Merganser was #144 on my California list. Believe it or not, Glaucous-winged Gull was #145. I usually don't pay much attention to gulls, only the obviously different ones, such as Bonaparte's Gulls, which were also there. There were hundreds of gulls.
I envy all of you who got to see the Black Rail and other rails today. The only rails I saw today were American Coots and Common Moorhens.
Happy New Year!
--Garrett
