Hi all!
Saturday, I drove to Panoche from HW 5, so I could focus on that area for a change. Interesting sightings for the day were:
- Dark Juvenile, with no hint of red or white anywhere
Little Panoche Dam:
- Canvasback, about 100
- Rock Pidgeon with normal coloration, except for Pied-eyes (by itself)
Panoche Hills Management Area (BLM):
- 3 Sage Thrashers (posing for pictures), possible more, singing a very distinctive fast-paced nearly monotone warble
- Mountain Bluebird (only a couple)
- Horned Lark (large flock)
- Savannah Sparrow (feeding in a large flock, just like the Horned Larks!)
- Lark Sparrows
Panoche Valley:
- Ferruginous Hawk (2)
- Prairie Falcon (3)
- Rock Wren
- Cassin's Kingbird (2) feeding in the trees next to me as I ate at Panoche Inn (fairly patient as I fumbled with my new camera)
- Leucistic Squirrel (on the road to New Idria - saw another 2 years ago at other end of valley - could this be a local color adaption?)
The owner of the Panoche Inn said that the Kingbirds drive him nuts, because they start singing at about 4am every morning this time of year! Overall, I saw 45 species and it was a perfect day to be there. Good birding!
