Re: [SBB] Birding Trip from San Benito to Merced County 18-19 Feb. '06

To add to this, a small group of us (orphaned birders of Les
Chibana's Palo Alto class) separately visited Panoche Valley on
Sunday starting from the Hwy. 5 end. We had two separate sightings of
Chukar, one at the Little Panoche Detention Dam, where the bird was
vocalizing a two-note whistle, and at Shotgun Pass where the other
bird was vocalizing the cackling call.

We did stop at Mercey Hot Springs (the $235 wasn't us), which had a
dearth of people but not of owls. We saw at least 7 Long Eared Owls,
at least 2 Barn Owls and 1-2 Great Horned Owls. Some of the three
species were all bunched in one group of trees.

The other sighting of note was up the BLM road. There were more than
40 Mountain Bluebirds gathered on the fence and flycatching.
