I found Ulistac Natural Area to be very birdy when I arrived shortly before noon today. No sign of the Evening Grosbeaks but a No. Mockingbird was under the Toyon bush. I counted 14 Fox Sparrows while covering the property in 2+ hours. I spotted a No. Flicker perched in a tree near the north end of the park. A red mark on the nape and black malar were my clues to a Yellow-shafted Flicker. Later he flew overhead and the bright yellow under wings were unmistakable in the bright sunlight.
I noticed an area of small oak trees and remembered meeting a group of teenagers in Guadalupe Oak Grove Park gathering acorns for Ulistac many years ago. I believe their leader was the teacher who saw the Evening Grosbeaks. That day was unforgettable for another reason. Right after I left that group I saw a little black dog running in the park. I've had Sparky for five years now.
Mike Mammoser help me identify an Orange-crowned Warbler I'd found. As I left the park I saw the bird again and for the first time saw the orange crown. It was so obvious but had always eluded my until today.
