The warm turn in the weather has brought out the
song in many species this week. In my visits to Monte Bello OSP's Gate 5 pond
this week I have heard singing House and Purple Finches, Oak Titmice, Bewick's
Wrens and Hutton's Vireos this week; a Varied Thrush sang there last
week.
Today, 2/10/2006, a Red-breasted Nuthatch joined
the chorus, the first I'd heard here since late October. It was in the conifer
stand just west of the pond, near the Page Mill/Skyline Blvd. intersection.
Yesterday 2/9 a Pileated Woodpecker called from down-canyon near the Stevens Cr.
Nature Trail/Canyon Trail junction.
Back on 2/4, a minimum of 286 Band-tailed Pigeons
converged on the remaining Madrone berries near the pond, the highest
concentration I've seen anywhere this year.
