[SBB] south county

On Saturday, 4 Feb 06, I visited the San Pedro ponds in Morgan Hill. This is
a group of small percolation ponds on Hill Rd just south of East Dunne Ave.
The few shorebirds here included 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a SPOTTED
SANDPIPER. Of interest was a CANADA GOOSE. This bird was about 2/3 the size
of the normal geese, a small flock of which was there for comparison, but
larger than a typical Cackling Goose. The bird had dusky cheek patches
rather than full white wrapping across the throat, and a slightly darker
breast than the larger geese just below the black neck, although it paled
quickly to the same color lower on the belly. I wonder if this bird may be a
"Lesser" Canada Goose, perhaps of the race parvipes or taverneri.

I stopped at the Coyote Creek Golf Course on the way back to look for a
possible grackle, but was rewarded only with a GOLDEN EAGLE perched on a
power tower across hwy 101. A walk up the bike path along Coyote Creek
quickly turned up the AMERICAN REDSTART. Some black spotting coming in on
the breast of this bird indicates that it is an immature male. At least 3
WOOD DUCKS were in the creek in this area.
