All:
Dotty's tale reminded me of a more extreme example. I was leading a
student field trip at "Rail Alley" and glimpsed a bird disappearing
into the water at a high tide. We formed up across the boardwalk and
sure enough a Clapper Rail emerged from the water on the other side
of the boardwalk and continued blithely into the pickleweed.
Apparently there was not enough clearance under the boardwalk to stay
above the water.
