Hello All,
My part of the Calero/Morgan Hill CBC today, 12/30/2006, included the
Stiles Ranch and Fortini trails at Santa Teresa County Park and
adjacent roads. Best bird was a completely unexpected Townsend's
Solitaire at the tip of a tall redwood on a somewhat overgrown property
just a stone's throw away from the Stiles parking area. This yard
(owned by a landscaper) is very birdy generally and has an amazing
conglomeration of tree species crammed onto it (you don't often see
palms, redwoods, olives, and giant bamboo side by side!) Other birds in
the yard seemed to be excited by fruit in the scrubby olive trees -
this could be what attracted the TOSO too. It flew off after a couple
of minutes - I thought into the yard trees, but I couldn't be sure.
Other birds of note included flocks of 6 American Pipits and 26 Horned
Larks in the recently plowed fields along the Calero Creek Trail just
past the end of pavement along San Vicente Rd., thirteen Rufous-crowned
Sparrows and a surprising 12 Lincoln's Sparrows. (These sparrows were
concentrated along the toe of the slope near the parking area.) Only 1
Rock Wren turned up along the route.
A Golden Eagle soared over headed southeast at 11:45 AM. Several
swallows circling high at that same time were too distant for species
ID.
Happy New Year to you all,
Garth Harwood
