[SBB] SEOWs and YBSS continue

Hi Birders-

Based on recent reports, I headed to Bixby Park in Palo Alto this afternoon hoping to see a Short-eared Owl. I wasn't disappointed. After only about 20 minutes of searching, I saw at 4:10 pm a Short-eared Owl foraging over the marsh E/SE of the landfill. I was standing among the 'mounds', one of the many strange landscaping features in the park. The owl was probably a quarter mile out. I called over nearby birders Chris McIntosh and John Estrell. We watched it for about 20 minutes. It made two dives into the marsh but appeared to come up empty. It eventually made a soft landing and disappeared. As we turned to leave we saw other birders watching an owl on a fence inside the landfill. As it flew it appeared to me to be a Barn Owl, but when it landed on a post it was indeed another Short-eared Owl! Earlier in the day, my daughter wanted to go for a walk in Ed Levin Park. Another excuse to see the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. It's still there in the tamarisks. Two Golden Eagles were over the hills E of the park and a female Common Merganser was on Spring Valley Pond.

Dave Weber,
Milpitas
