I birded for a few hours this morning 12-16-06 hoping to find something
good for count week. Edenvale Park was a little better than a previous
visit on Thursday when all I saw were a few Townsends Warblers. One Red
breasted Sapsucker flew into a Pepper tree and one Fox Sparrow were seen
on the west side of the park. Today several Hermit Thrush were seen and
more heard. As I was leaving I heard the call of a Varied Thrush. I
tracked it to an oak tree but then heard the call from the west side of
the fence on private property.
At the junction of Hyde Park and Vista Park there's a big open field. On
Thursday I saw 15 W. Meadowlarks, Greater Egrets, a No. Harrier, 4 White
tailed Kites and Red tailed Hawks in this field. Today I counted 15
Great Egrets hunting in the field and two White tailed Kites. This may
not be within the count circle.
I found an interesting sapsucker in a neighbors Pepper tree at dusk last
night. It was calling a repeated neeah call which got my attention when
I walked by with Sparky. A Red shouldered Hawk was watching the
sapsucker from the top of a Redwood tree. I ran home to get my
binoculars and saw the bird for a few seconds before it flew off. I
don't want to guess the species now, but have been watching for it
today. It had a lot of red on the head but wasn't a Red breasted
Sapsucker. The Pepper tree has many sapsucker holes. This bird is in
the Morgan Hill/Calero count circle so I hope it sticks around for a few
more weeks.
