All,
Last night (12/6), at about 5 PM, Rich Page, Frank Vanslager and I had good
views of a SHORT-EARED OWL flying over the fenced-in Palo Alto landfill
southwest of Byxbee Park. Twenty minutes earlier, before Frank and I
arrived as Rich waited for us, he had good views of a SEOW from the
Byxbee Park parking lot as the Owl flew over the hills of the park to the
east. Much later we were treated to extended vocalizations of a NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL along Wright Station Rd (50 to 100 yds below
the gated entrance Lake Elsman). These vocalizations included
the catlike screeches for which the Owl is named. Unfortunately we were
unable to locate this bird (a lifer bird for Rich) in our
flashlights.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
