Late this afternoon, at about 4:15, I saw the BRANT Goose among the CANADA
GEESE on the Palo Alto Golf Course. I had to walk most of the way to the
bridge to Ravenswood, along the trail that starts from the cul-de-sac at the
end of Geng Road. Also along the path were a COOPER'S HAWK, a fly-over
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, and a MERLIN perched atop one of the power structures.
I then rushed to the Duck Pond at Palo Alto Baylands proper, where I found
the CATTLE EGRET going to roost in a palm tree in the northeast corner of
the enclosed area there. It was kind of fun, as I was observing the Cattle
Egret and a nearby SNOWY EGRET, to watch as they hid themselves, and the
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS just as stealthily emerged. This was at about
5:00 pm. I then took a power walk to rail corner, where I heard many (at
least four) VIRGINIA RAIL and one distant CLAPPER RAIL.
